COMMERCIAL MUSHROOM CULTURES
This Library Tries To Maintain Strains Closest To Their Origins Or Closest To Their Peak Fruiting Potentials.
Based in Cape Town, we are working towards being the 1# mycological brand in South Africa. We strive to make the world of mycology accessible to all, creating, teaching, and innovating to improve tomorrow. Cape Town Exotic Mushrooms is constantly working with these strains, refining our selection process, screening and maintaining cell lines, as well as testing new domesticated isolates harvested from the best crosses.
Growing of our gourmet and medicinal mushrooms
Our mushrooms are 100% organic, non-GMO, vegan, and gluten-free.
Our mushrooms thrive on supplemented hardwood sawdust, depending on the strain we supplement with either soybean hulls or wheat bran. Supplementing our hardwood allows us to produce high quality and high yielding mushrooms. Most gourmet or medicinal mushroom varieties are saprophytic mushrooms that feed on deciduous hardwood trees. By growing our mushrooms in hardwood, we can best simulate the ideal environment that these mushrooms have chosen and love in nature.

New To Mushrooms? We Got You Covered.
Certainly! Children enjoy the mushroom cultivation process as much as adults do. When they have adult supervision and someone to ensure thorough mushroom cooking, growing and harvesting can become an enjoyable year-round project for kids. It’s important to be aware that mushrooms release spores as they complete their growth cycle. Therefore, individuals, both young and old, who have respiratory allergies or weakened immune systems should cultivate mushrooms only in well-ventilated spaces. They should also take additional precautions when handling mushrooms, such as wearing a face covering, to minimize overall spore exposure.
Indirect sunlight, ample humidity, and temperatures ranging from 60-75 F are the favoured conditions for mushrooms. Certain species, such as pink oysters, exhibit better heat tolerance, while others adapt well to fluctuations in humidity. Nevertheless, the ideal approach is to establish an environment that is moderately cool, damp, and shaded.
Yess. When consuming home-grown mushrooms, ensure that you cook them thoroughly using heat. If you are trying a specific species for the first time, it is advisable to begin with a small quantity to test for allergies, even when they are cooked.
The term “fruit” can hold specific meanings, encompassing foods like berries and apples, or it can possess a slightly broader sense, relating to the reproductive process of an organism. Hence, tomatoes and rosehips represent the fruits of these plants, housing the seeds within. Similarly, mushrooms serve as the fruits of a fungus, encapsulating spores. Thus, the commencement of mushroom production by a fungus is termed as fruiting. A “flush” denotes the simultaneous emergence of numerous mushroom fruit bodies. Several of the fungi we cultivate tend to yield multiple mushrooms concurrently, a phenomenon referred to as a ‘flush’ of mushrooms.
If mushroom cultivation is new to you, we advise a gradual approach to familiarize yourself with the process. Begin by using a Mini Mushroom Grow kit or a beginner Friendly Fruiting Block kit. Both of these options don’t demand any specialized equipment. This allows you to develop a sense of the practice. Once you’re at ease, consider acquiring a monotub or martha tent for indoor cultivation. Alternatively, if you prefer outdoor growth, you can invest in a container or a drill bit (for plug spawn). As you gain confidence, you can upgrade your equipment. However, starting out doesn’t require a substantial investment.
You can cultivate numerous edible mushrooms at home, but the choice of growth location plays a crucial role. If you’re a beginner, we suggest cultivating the following.
- Oyster mushrooms (both indoors and outdoors)
- Wine Cap mushrooms (in outdoor beds)
- Shiitake mushrooms (on outdoor logs)
These varieties all have a proven track record of high yield, enhancing the chances of a successful initial endeavor!
Some species can transition from “pinning” to a “flush” within just two weeks, while others, such as reishi, might require several months. Additionally, if you are cultivating on logs, it’s important to consider the incubation period, which typically spans from 6 months to a year.
Indeed, mushrooms thrive poorly when exposed to direct sunlight. Nonetheless, they do require ambient light for their growth. Thus, if your intention is to cultivate indoors in settings like a basement, closet, or any area devoid of natural sunlight, it will be necessary to provide supplementary artificial grow lighting.
For indoor cultivation, options include growing mushrooms on your countertop (using a kit), in jars, bags, a monotub, or a martha tent. If you prefer outdoor growth, you can cultivate mushrooms in containers, garden beds, or on logs, stumps, and totems.
Many pets display a natural curiosity, and a few might attempt to dig into substrates or consume raw mushrooms. Due to this, we suggest selecting a section of your home that pets cannot access for your mushroom cultivation. While mushrooms are typically safe, it’s important to note that pets, like humans, can experience stomach issues from ingesting raw mushrooms. Alternatively, you might find your living area scattered with spawn and/or sterile substrate upon returning home, which can be quite a hassle to clean up.
Mushrooms consume the substrate they develop on, eliminating the need for extra feeding or fertilization.
If a humidity-controlled environment is not being utilized (such as a humidity tent or martha tent), you should water your mushrooms 2-3 times a day. However, avoid over-soaking them. Apply a fine mist until water droplets become visible, and then monitor them for indications of moisture loss. If the mushrooms become dry, they will wilt, and their edges will curl. This implies that you may need to consider relocating them or increasing the frequency of watering.
