MEA (Malt Extract Agar) is a popular agar medium used for cultivating fungi. It provides a nutrient-rich environment that supports the growth of diverse fungal species. With its balanced composition of malt extract, yeast extract and agar, MEA agar is an essential tool for studying fungal morphology, observing spore formation, and cultivating various fungi in research, educational, and industrial settings.

Please note: All orders of our Pre-Poured Agar Plates (MEA) are custom made: lead time can be anywhere between 3-5 days from date of order. Orders usually ship within 12-24 hours.

Description

Pre-Poured Agar Plates (MEA):

Pre-poured Agar plates (MEA), also known as Malt Extract Agar, serve as a widely used agar medium specifically formulated for cultivating fungi. It provides a nutrient-rich environment that fosters the growth and development of diverse fungal species. The composition of MEA includes malt extract (a source of carbohydrates and essential nutrients) and yeast extract (providing protein, B vitamins, minerals, and fiber), creating an optimal substrate for fungal growth. MEA agar is a versatile medium extensively used in research, industrial, and educational settings to study fungi, conduct experiments, and isolate fungal strains. Its reliable performance and wide applicability make MEA agar an essential tool for fungal cultivation and exploration.

Includes:

  • Parafilm pre-cut strips.
  • 90mm Standard Pre-poured MEA agar plates – comes sealed with Parafilm.

Storage:

Store plates upside down in a refrigerator or in a cold dark room. If they are stored in a room, check the plates after a few hours for condensation in the lid. If condensation is accumulating in the lids, there must be some heat source that is driving water out of the agar and into lids.

Features:

Colours Assortment – Colours showcase the contrasting white mycelium as it grows, providing an aesthetically pleasing view. They also offer an enjoyable visual experience. However, Colours/dyes do not contribute to the mycelium’s growth; their main benefit lies in facilitating the identification of high-performing areas on the plates.

Individually Sealed Plates – Working with agar can be a very tedious process, with our biggest concern being contamination. Most vendors send out bulk plates unwrapped/unsealed in large plastic bags. In contrast, we have chosen to seal all of our agar plates. This ensures the utmost protection from contamination when opening the bag to retrieve the plates.

Guaranteed 100% Clean – We stand by our products and assure you that the agar plates you receive will be completely sterile and free of contamination. In the unlikely event that you receive a contaminated plate, we will promptly replace it. If you encounter any issues, feel free to contact us for a replacement.

Cautions and Considerations:

Due to agar being difficult to ship when extremely soft, these (MEA) agar plates are made fairly solid, therefore if you intend to use these plates for spore germination, we recommend hydrating your spores before plating them. This can be done by placing some spores in some sterilized distilled water for around 2-4 days before plating them onto your petri dishes.

Working with agar is generally considered more advanced and demands a sterile environment. However, achieving a sterile environment can be as straightforward as using an enclosed clear tote, also known as a still air box or SAB. You can create a still air box by simply drilling two holes for your arms in a clear tote. These low-cost still air boxes offer an effective solution to reduce the risk of contamination during agar-related tasks.

Please Note: Condensation may occur due to changes in temperature during shipping. During shipping some of the moister from agar may evaporate and condense on lids of the plastic petri dishes. The condensation should not be seen as a contamination vector since the water itself is completely sterile.
